Package Strapping Techniques

time2010/12/13

Package straps come in a wide array of materials and styles. Packing tape and plastic straps are commonly used materials, but straps are also made in polyester and steel varieties, according to the City-Link Global Network. Depending on the size and overall weight of a package the strapping technique will vary. Most packing jobs can be handled manually, but certain large-scale projects require the aid of a strapping machine that can secure oversized packages at a high rate of efficiency.
Manual Plastic Strapping
Personal packaging jobs can range from small gift boxes to the large-scale packaging of home furnishings and household appliances. Plastic strapping is best used for small to mid-sized projects that demand a certain level of portability. When packing any delicate item, surround it in a pressure-absorbing material like foam or soft plastic. Once the item is secured in its box or container, use an adhesive to stabilize the outer portions of the package. Plastic straps should be wrapped tightly around the package at even intervals. Most small to mid-sized packages can be secured with only two straps wrapped evenly around both sides of the package. Straps often come with buckles or ties to adjust the desired tightness of the strap. Tighten plastic straps until they rest flush against the outer material of the package.
Plastic Strapping Machines
Larger packaging projects benefit from the use of a plastic strapping machine. These packing tools come in two varieties--manual and electrical. The manual plastic strapping machine uses a pump handle that is pressed down by the packer to dispense given amounts of plastic strap. The packer should surround the package or container with an even amount of plastic strap on both sides and use the strapping machine's locking mechanism to tie off the desired amount.
Mechanical strapping machines can be powered by electrical outlets or rechargeable battery packs. The electrical strapping machines are useful for securing large amounts of packages in a short amount of time. Businesses that rely upon a large amount of shipping will benefit from the use of an electrical strapping machine. The actual strapping technique will remain the same as that used for manual machines.
Steel Strapping
Heavy packages may require the aid of a sturdier form of strap. Steel strapping is used to secure large and heavy packages that may distress standard plastic strapping. Steel strapping is dispensed and secured by both manual and electrical strapping machines and should be used with wooden packaging only, advises City-Link Global Network.
A wooden pallet is a rectangular set of wood boards fastened together to make a strong transport structure easily lifted by a pallet jack or forklift. Place the desired shipping item on top of the pallet and secure it with plastic wrap, tape or another adhesive. Raise the pallet off of the ground with either a forklift or pallet jack. Using a strapping machine, evenly secure steel straps around both sides of the package. Depending on size, a third steel strap may be necessary in the middle of the package. Make sure that the steel straps are fixed tightly against the surface of the package.
